Yesterday we made a lot of new, temporary additions to the tribe. John decided to take Reef, an Australian Shepherd and "foster" him until he found a new home. Reality struck him when we walked into the shelter and all but four dogs had been euthanised that morning. The only thing that saved Reef was the "do not euthanise, call this number" note that John left on his tag the week before. He's a sweet boy, although none of the cats like him at all. His official birthday will be 11.15, the day his new really began.
To think that we pulled over 7 deer ticks off of him. Now he is happy and herding the new kittens that we are fostering. The kittens were dropped off at the shelter when they were roughly 3 weeks old. Last night I gave them each a bath. Two hours and four hundred dead fleas later, their happily laying on the heating pad getting dry...
By the end of the night, their bellies are full of milk and they are out for the count!
Roxie thinks that she is the mother of the kittens and grooms them. They are still learning how to use the litter box. While everyone thinks I am crazy for taking them in for a few days, I couldn't rest my head on my warm pillow at night knowing that they were starving in the unheated shelter throughout the night.
If all people were as warm and grateful as these kittens, I'd spend a lot more time with them.
Awwww, Leah! I'm so glad there are people like you out there that take the time to love on these little creatures. Izzie would be proud! ;) I can't wait until I live somewhere else next year and I'm able to spread some luv myself...I think I'll be in trouble...I'll have a tribe of my own! :) Abrazos~
